The Alabama Scholastic Press Association, sponsored by The University of Alabama, seeks to empower high school newspaper, yearbook, newsmagazine, literary magazine and broadcast staffs around Alabama. The Open Window was awarded the honor of Merit for their 2009 edition. The magazine was also once again the only middle school in the state to receive an honor for literary magazines.

The 2009 edition also received the award for Excellence from the National Council of Teachers of English Program to Recognize Excellence in Student Literary Magazines.
